Dr. Eric Tang is assistant professor in the African and African Diaspora Studies Department and core faculty with the Center for Asian American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. A former community organizer, Tang has been awarded both journalistic and scholarly prizes for his writings on post-Katrina New Orleans. His current research focuses on the past and present of racial segregation in Austin, Texas.

Between the mid-1950s to the late 1960s, the United States was defined by the struggle for civil rights and new radical campaigns of civil resistance and nonviolent protest. Inspired by the African American movement, Asian Americans fought with the same spirit to solve shared
