Like RuPaul's Drag Race??? A fan of impersonations? This week, Austin Poetry Slam brings you 3 incredible "girls" from the new generation of Austin drag stardom!!!
Three gorgeous queens:
Kalandra Bankhead (Austin Drag ALL STARS FINALIST)
Pilar Salt (Austin Drag Superstar FINALIST, writer of An Obviously Foggot)
& the ONE AND ONLY
MS. PATTI RICE (WINNER of Austin Drag Superstar, Cycle 4)
Coming to you live on the APS stage!!!
Kalandra hails from her family's summer villa of East Hampton, New York, Kalandra Bankhead was born with a tin spoon in her mouth. After spending the better part of her formative years watching a wide range of teen movies from the '80s, she decided to drop out and be an actress and singing sensation. Then her Adam's Apple grew in and that dream dropped lower than her voice. She finally hitchhiked her way to Austin on $24.37 after hearing about the vintage stores and food trucks. She is now living amongst the fraternity boys and hipsters in West Campus, never spending more than $20 on a dress.
As a performer, she enjoys performing an array of talents- from lipsynching in Turkish and stripping down to her padded bra to performing as Florence + the Machine (it's easy because they're both tall and mannish.) Kalandra is rapidly becoming known as the ballerina queen around town, which is funny because they don't make toe shoes big enough to fit her waterski feet.
Pilar does theatre, not pageants. All that jewelry is heavy, and she prefers to do the judging.
As a boy: Bastion runs a theatre company called Poison Apple Initiative. His play AN OBVIOUSLY FOGGOT will be produced at Castro's Warehouse May 23-26 and May 30- June 2. HOLIER THAN THOU, about a reality TV show where people compete for Jesus powers, goes up at The Off Center June 20- July 6. www.poisonappleinitiative.com
When Patti was approached for her interview, she responded as thus: "No comment without a shot of tequila!" Laugh at her when you her fall down.
Come let your hair down and whatnot! Or just rip it off all together! Ru knows, these girls do!
Seriously!!!!
