Thinkery strives to be an inclusive, friendly, inspiring space to learn for the entire community, regardless of financial status, mental/physical abilities, ethnicity, nationality, race, sexual orientation, gender expression/identity or family status. By providing experiences to underserved and underrepresented audiences, the museum broadens its ability to equip and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers. We’re able to reach these goals through our community outreach programs, supported by the annual gifts of the Thinkery Clubhouse and our Open Door Initiative.
During Community Night Spotlight evenings, Thinkery shines a light on a unique aspect of the rich diversity that makes Austin such an amazing place to live, play and learn with educational activities facilitated by staff and special community presenters.
On August 16, join us for a playful evening in celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer families, as well as LGBTQ adults with children in their lives. Admission is by donation, with a suggested $1 dollar donation.
LGBTQ Family Pride Evening activities and community partners include:
5 pm – Bilingual Storytime
5–8 pm – Get cooking with Common Threads and learn healthy snack recipes and practice safe knife skills.
6 pm – Mini-Pride Parade: Grab a rainbow flag, a noise maker and show your pride as we march through the museum.
6:15 pm – Storytime with Austin International Drag Foundation Inc. drag queen storytellers.
Sew Your Own Pride Flag (ages 8+) – Use sewing machines to create your own rainbow-colored flag in Space 8.
Dramatic Diffraction – Explore prisms to reveal the colorful secrets of white light.
“What Makes a Family?” Art Wall – Add a picture of what family means to you—we’re more alike than different!
Parachute Play – Experience your kindergarten glory days while jumping under a colorful parachute.
