Madonna's groundbreaking documentary premiered to both critical acclaim and box office success on May 24,1991. Madonna granted director Alek Keshishian full access to her life during her controversial and record breaking Blonde Ambition tour. The film offers a shocking glimpse into her life, not only for showing her boundry pushing antics, but also for depicting her in less than flattering moments as well as investigating the family like bonds she forms with her back up dancers. Many of the dancers were gay and the film was many American's first glimpse of gay sensuality. The film went on to be the highest grossing documentary film of all time and ushered in the concept of "reality" as entertainment.
