Harvey Milk Day in Texas, which is recognized by the Harvey Milk Foundation in San Francisco, started four years ago by two Austinite college students, Tiffany Bishop and Omar Lopez, who felt that there needed to be a place to inform and empower the LGBTQ community of Texas. The plan was to create a congregation of experts in various aspects on LGBTQ culture, issues, and training in actions toward social justice and awareness. Then take action by holding a march from City Hall to the State Capitol where an awe inspiring rally takes place, and is concluded by a collaborative planning for future actions, support and needed highlighted issues.
In the last four years of influencing the community, Harvey Milk Day in Texas has never turned down a workshop or made it mandatory for people to pay for the conference. Harvey Milk Day in Texas does not see this as an opportunity to make money, but a chance for folks to have a voice and the tools to make positive change. Harvey Milk always stated, "You gotta give'em hope." and that is the number one priority.
