I have grown up in Austin, and I have to honestly say, Oilcan's is among if not the best gay bar in Austin. Check it out, and Rain is next door!
When in Austin, this is THE bar to stop in and see. Bartenders are quick and cute, reasonable prices, good mix of people. They have also put some $$ into a remodel. The people here are friendly and it's a nice spot to end your night!
great place...lots of hot people, WONDERFUL staff, great place to hang! I recommend it to anyone in the area!
Oilcan's is probably the most popular gay bar in town. The crowd is youngish-mixed age. Some remodeling has upgraded the space. Music is good and the location is prime for downtown pub crawling. Bartenders are above-average in skill and looks. The place rocks all weekend, even when students are out-of-town.
This is most likely the nicest bar in town but the decor is out dated expose brick and the like..you would think in a town as super trendy as Austin the Gay bars would reflect that....but no almost all the bars have dirty basement floors and little or no innovation.....
I remember being the 17 year old twink trying to sneak in to play and not being able to get in and now that i am 23 (still a twink) and in a relationship OCH offers a great mixture of dance and chill its great to have a drink and relax on the patio or get filthy and dance the night away not to mention great location to start the night then hop to a couple other clubs and end then end the night there
I had a great time and plan on going back as often as possible. Almost all of the people I met were very friendly, staff and customers.
The new owners have put a great deal of work in to the place and it shows! OCH has always been a favorite of mine. I was sad to see the decline, but happy with the new look! Great bar, great bartenders, great specials! OCH is back!
Sad to see that OCH is not what it used to be or very easily could be again! This is a great location with an established pulse but needs serious help! It is still busy on the weekends and really the only gay DANCE club! OCH has plenty of potential but the owners are out of touch as this bar is outdated!
Like most say on the reviews. Used to be the best place in town to dance your ass off. It has gone to sh_t and it appears to be fledgling to the smaller, no dance floor, loungy clubs. Head to Rain or Fabric! Needs to be completely overhauled! Very sad to see it that way!
Circa 1990's was great, packed with hotties, great music, great staff, and was the place to be! 2003- present day is dull, frequented by the older crowd and going down hill fast! Their DJ's and Staff of many years are now next door at Rain! The owners of this bar made serious coins and could careless about this place. Obviously, it is catcing up with them now. Austin needs a true gay dance club but until then head on over to Rain.
Yes, as recently reported this place has been in decline. I have been frequenting this place for many years & most all of my favorite bartenders have left & gone next door to RAIN. This means I no longer get the special treatment that I use to receive & had to tell a new "yung pup" behind the bar recently. However, it is still a great place & hopefully it will get better really soon. Sunday afternoons for happy hour are still the best here...there are no better burgers in town like Margie's & you can't beat the price either!!!!
OCH's used to be the place in Austin, no questions asked! The staff was seasoned and some were very attractive. The music, atomsphere, patio, etc...were really what made this bar a complete package. It was ALWAYS packed! Over the last few years it has started to decline. These people made tons of money and rarely could you see it being reinvested in the club. They finally made bigger restrooms and moved the DJ booth but other than that, it still looks the same as it did 15 years ago. The lighting system seems to barely work and there is nothing special about their dance floor. I guess the best way to understand their decline is .....The most popular & established bartenders, DJ's, and other staff members no longer work for OCH. The majority of them are at Rain. That should say enough. Again, try it out, it is still ok but nothing like it used to be.
Other than the attitude laiden bar crowd on Friday and Saturday nights, the bar, bartenders, and other bar staff continue to make OCH a staple in the gay community. An old standard that everyone can count on for a good time. Cheers to expanding the men's restroom, Jeers to banashing women to the alley.
