Charlie's is a fun place to hang out. Most of the crowed is just looking for a good time, and not worried about looking their best, or what strangers might think. As a result, some of the patrons look ready for TLC's What Not To Wear. However, I usually see a handful of attractive men who are more than willing to... talk to you. On the nites that Charlie's does have a cover, $5, all domestics and wells are only a dollar which more than makes up for admision. Its a good time local bar, not a nigt club.
Was here April '08 and didn't realize that there is a $5 cover on Friday nites! Still, had 2 drinks here. The go-go boys were TOTALLY LAME, as one just sat there and talked with a "friend" and the other was on his iPhone texting. BORING! Also, we must have gotten there at dinner, as the staff was eating for our entire stay here. Cheap prices came with the cover, but the rest makes it a questionable stop at best.
Charlie's is the only place in Austin that doesn't make DQ's feel unwelcome, and I really appreciate the tolerant atmosphere, where, gosh, even people 'hit with the ugly stick' are not made to feel unwelcome. I know that's not in keeping with community stereotypes of only tolerating college age twinks, and that's why I love Charlie's.
This is the place for those over-the-hill, past their prime, or just plain hit with the ugly stick. However, bartenders are friendly and make worthwhile drinks. Strangely, this place has the hottest exotic dancers in town. Music can be hit or miss certain nights of the week, and yet only the drunk ones get on the floor to dance.
Even the go - go boys were bored (although very washboard!) On the Friday night I was there, the energy level was low that I thought I stumbled into a bingo hall. The dancers were stiff in all the wrong places. One was wearing sunglasses so he never had to make eye contact with the patrons. Bartenders were friendly and drinks strong thankfully.
Charlie's is really comfortable during happy hour--with great bar staff! Later, the crowd gets younger, edgier and fills the place like a New Orleans gay bar. Packed on weekends, late. No more of a drug scene here than in the straight bars downtown, if that's what you're looking for.
Charlie's is the home away from home, Great Friends Staff
love the music, atmosphere, and bartenders they know how to keep a customer happy.
This bar has been around for ages. It is not in the warehouse district but not far either. Very poor interior, awful dance area, and a cover charge! For what? I can expect a cover from a dance club but this place is a far cry from that. It can be ok to visit but the warehouse clubs have more to offer and much more upscale. Gay way to understand the differences...Charlie's would be Jordache and the warehouse district clubs would be Diesel!
Cool bar, awsome patio, cocky bar staff, and little drug users every where. I was suprise to walk into what i thought to be the mens room, there was a total of 4 people in one stall using coke. If your into drugs, you'll find it here..Along with other things. Cover charge very steep for nothin special.
A fun and energetic place to go and just hang-out. Good people, good drinks, good loven.
I live in Houston and went to visit a friend who has relocated back to Austin. I had been a couple of times and but never to many of the bars. I was very please to be taken to Charlie's. There was a small crowd, which was great and later picked up in number. The owner, David gave me a tour of the place, told me what he had done in the remodeling and what he'd like to do in the future. The Staff was very friendly and great at remember what I was drinking. The owner has also taken into consideration the new smoking ban in clubs and has created a smoking area on their huge patio, which also has a fully stocked and manned bar.
If in Austin, I suggest this be your first and only stop.
After countless years of frequenting Charlie's, this is most definately a place to come and hang out. Excellent bartenders, bar staff and door persons. Their extensive and continuous remodeling can only be seen as a plus. Charlie's only downfall(s): 2+ hours for a drag show (2 hours too many in my opinion - good thing the bar is nicely divided to spare the rest of us the agony!) and a cover charge - why??
its great i have gone to it for many yrs. i now live in houston, but when i come to austin i go there. this is the only place left besides the crossing bar till they closed it over 12yrs ago i hope it doesn't close because then i will be lost.
